2016 Scotland and the Easter Rising Page 1

As part of our exciting programme to mark the centenary of the Easter
Rising, on Saturday, 5th March at the STUC, the 1916 Rising Centenary
Committee (Scotland) has organised a day of talks, readings and workshops
rounded off by a céili at night.

This is an ideal opportunity to learn about different aspects of the Easter
Rising, which was probably the single most important event in 20th century
Irish history and this makes it especially worthy of commemoration. The
developments that flowed from the Easter Rising fundamentally altered the
political and constitutional make-up of these islands, and for the wider
world the Easter Rising provided inspiration for freedom struggles in
Africa and Asia.

The event will bring together a range of speakers with expert knowledge of
the Rising.

The part played by Irish and Scottish revolutionaries in Clydeside, in the
lead up to and during the Easter Rising will be acknowledged. The leading
role of Edinburgh -born James Connolly, will also be highlighted, together
with the key contribution of women like Coatbridge-born Margaret Skinnider.

The Annexe, Stewartville St, Partick

The annual Morning Star Grand Christmas Bazaar is taking place in Partick again this year, in the Annexe Community Centre. All funds go towards the only daily Socialist newspaper - the only paper owned by it's readers & which supports trade unions & working class communities.

There are many ways in which you can help!

Help to set up starts from 10am in the Annexe. You can also help give out flyers to local folks on the streets - there plenty of bargains to be enjoyed as well as an opportunity for people to find out about the only daily paper which sticks up for them! Assistance is always needed in looking after stalls and being on hand to assist with tea and coffee. Perhaps you'll even get to try your hand at spinning the "Wheel of Fortune"!
